➽Activity of the Day: Reading group

Today's activity was a reading group with two girls. Their comprehension level is at a similar spot, so we read together. We read Goldilocks and the Three Bears twice. The first time, I read. The second time, they switched every page. If they read a word incorrectly, I would wait until they finished the sentence to see if they could correct themselves. If they didn't, whilst point to the incorrect word I would say, "[student's name], you're doing an excellent job. Will you sound this word out for me?" Complicated words are the same as last week. "Was" vs. "Saw" is an issue. Students are also confusing the letters "s" and "d". I'm working tirelessly to undo these two common mistakes made by every student I've worked with.

➽Activity of the Day: Reading lesson

The kids got new books today! It was great seeing their excitement as they showed me which ones they were most excited to read. I worked with one girl today. Her comprehension level requires few words per page and lots of repetition. After she breezed through her first book with few errors, I made a challenge for her with the second one. I told her I wanted to see if she could read the book aloud without me reading it first. Though there were more mistakes, she had a hefty feeling of accomplishment for finishing the book without hearing it prior.

In fact, she was so motivated to keep growing as a learner that she asked me if we could go through flashcards. She's still at the stage where she learns words by sounding out one letter at a time, but she's beginning to recognize phonetics. I can't wait to see her continue to grow!

Recess made me reflect on my role as a leader today. Though there's typical daily second-grade dramas I help to mend, this one hit close to home. There is a girl who constantly clings to me. She likes to show me her tricks. While I'm glad she feels like she has someone to play with, she told me I'm her best friend. I feel it would be bad for her development if she was playing with me instead of other kids her age. I tried to push her towards other kids. I will keep doing so next week.

Comments

  1. I am glad you are there as a role model!

Have you observed any outliers this week? The kids that really seem get the new concepts very quickly?

  2. There are definite outliers. However, my responsibility is to work with kids who have either fallen behind or on the brink of doing so. These kids require extra practice, so they learn English and I learn patience!
