Week 6: October 17th-21st
Tuesday, October 18th
➽Activity of the Day: Poetry
One fun way to get the kids reading is through poetry. Not only must they work on their literacy skills, but they are multitasking by reading a poem that matches a tune. When I walked in the classroom today, they were in a circle singing, "I'm a Little Pumpkin" to the tune "I'm a Little Teapot". I believe that poems encourage them to read and be confident in their literacy skills, because they wanted to show off on how well they can read verses.
➽Activity of the Day: Assembly
Today at Hubbell we had an assembly. Grades k-2 filed into the gymnasium for a science lesson. An employee from the Science Center of Iowa taught the students about temperature and pressure. Photography wasn't allowed, but the employee began with a balloon tube- the kind used to make balloon animals. The employee then put the balloon in hot water and it deflated. When she pulled it out, the balloon was back to normal. She did the same experiment again, but with liquid nitrogen. Getting the same results, she explained that pressure drops with both increases and decreases of temperature. The kids were awestruck. Visual representations help them learn.

How well did such a large group behave at the assembly? I am not sure how well high schoolers could do with it!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure who would behave "better"- elementary students or high schoolers. However, elementary students are more excited to be learning. As a result, while there was a lot of fidgeting, the assembly was full of active listeners!
