➽Activity of the Day: Reading

I got to read with a girl who used to be a usual, but I stopped working with so much as she was progressing in fluency. The first thing I noticed when reading with her today is that she was able to make connections in the story and inferences of what was to come. We were reading a book where a squirrel was questioning what species he was because he was without stripes. When looking at the other animals, my reader inferred beforehand what the author's explanation would be for the squirrel not belonging to the other species.

While her connections are getting better, I couldn't help but question how long it takes for someone to learn a new word. I would have this girl sound the letters out for words she didn't know. Once she said the word (and re-read the sentence as I always have the kids do), she would move on. Two sentences later she would get tripped up by the same word. What gives?

➽Activity of the Day: Language

Today I was working with three students on language rules and grammar such as nouns, adjectives and verbs, similes vs. metaphors, etc. It did not go well.
The three students were horsing around, refusing to work on the problems they had in front of them, and asking me why I wear a certain hairstyle so much. It took another teacher having to tattle on them to Mrs. Carlson for us to get anywhere.
That said, the person I'm most upset with is myself. One would think that after three months with them I'd be able to demand their attention.

Comments

  1. What types of books do the students seem to enjoy the most?

  2. The kids definitely do best with picture books about animals. Being able to sympathize with characters makes reading more interesting. What better to sympathize with than a dog or squirrel?
