➽Activity of the Day: Reading

I was reading with one of my usual girls today, and she's definitely coming along. She said that she hadn't read over break (much to my chagrin). We started with a book she likes but which has enough words she can't memorize it. She breezed right along! She had a few bumbles, but that was to be expected.

I'm realizing that there's a trick with her. It doesn't seem to matter how many words are on a page (or the length of the words) but how many pages there are in the book. When we were reading a book that was longer but relatively easier, she clammed up. She stumbled, lost her spot, and would try to get me sidetracked (after a semester of teaching, I'm becoming immune to that, though!). I think this is a confidence thing.

➽Activity of the Day: Counter chips

Today I was working with another one of my usual kids- this time in math. We were doing addition problems. First, she started by taking a two-minute test that kids take each week to track progress. She didn't do fantastic- 6/25, but for her this is a HUGE improvement. She now understands the concept of addition and is beginning to be able to do mental math in her head.

Then, we went to a more difficult addition sheet that required counters. It felt like pulling teeth out trying to get her to keep going. It was just like my girl from yesterday. These kids are getting flustered when they see they have a lot of work to do- it doesn't matter the difficulty.

Here's the thing- she was showing higher math skills as we went along. One of the math problems was 7 + 6. She started by getting pieces out (she likes to line them up by twos) and without counting, she immediately knew she had 10 pieces because she had 5 rows of 2. She was doing multiplication and didn't even know it. Then, I asked her to find 5 + 3 in her head, and she couldn't. I'm trying to find where the disconnect is.
