    Monday, January 23rd

➽Activity of the Day: Reading

     I read with one of my typical girls today. I haven't worked with her in a couple weeks. She's starting to backslide (stumbling over words, slowed pace, etc) so I'm hoping to work with her more in the coming weeks. That said, she is continuing to make inferences and summarize what she read! 




    Wednesday, January 25th

➽Activity of the Day: Reading with new kids

    Mrs. Carlson was gone today so I read with students I don't often spend much time with. These are the days where I read with students who are either at or above grade level for math and reading. I got to spend time with two of these students today. More than just getting to know them as readers, this is my time to learn about their personalities. I ask what they're doing tonight/ this weekend, what their favorite tv shows are, etc. 

    

    Thursday, January 26th

➽Activity of the Day: Addition problems

    I did addition problems with one of my recurring students today. To meet the minimum requirement for grade level on a two-minute, 25-question addition test, she would have needed to get 10 correct. She got 5. 

    That's not why today was notable though. After the test, we practiced similar problems on a different page. This was the first day where every problem had a similar term. Today it was three (meaning every problem would be 3 +6, 3+9, etc.). Instead of throwing her pencil on the ground or saying "I don't want to do this" like usual, she was here to work! She put the counting chips away and computed in her head- then, when done with her practice problems, asked if she could finish the problems on her test. I was so happy!




    Friday, January 27th

➽Activity of the Day: Reading

    I read Billy Goats Gruff today with one of my typical kids. It was so fun. She didn't want to show me her book as she read so she stood up and started walking around the hallway. To get me to play along, she knew she had to work hard. She sounded out words on her own and even implemented voices. I was so proud of her!

  Tuesday, November 1st      ➽Activity of the Day:  Case of the Greedy Gnomes     I worked with a group of 3 for the Case of the Greedy Gnomes. These kids are above average for reading comprehension and mathematics. The Case of the Greedy Gnomes is a multi-day riddle. Each day, these kids would interpret bar graphs. There would be math questions corresponding to the graphs (ex. How many more blueberry pies were there than apple tarts?), and each question would have a letter (ex. the letter e). Following the example, if there were three more blueberry pies than apple tarts, the number three would correspond to e. Above the graph were blank spaces with numbers underneath them. For this blueberry pie/apple tart problem, every blank space with the number 3 underneath would be replaced by an 'e'. Week 13: December 12th-16th

      Wednesday, December 14th ➽Activity of the Day: Creating a complex sentence     The class worked on creating a sentence today. The parameters were that every kid's sentence needed to include a noun, verb, and adjective- and they all needed to start with the letter M. The students began by coming up with example words as a class. Then they went back to their table and constructed their own sentences. I walked around, helping out and checking spelling.      Thursday, December 15th ➽Activity of the Day: Kwanzaa Day 1     Today the class was learning about Kwanzaa. They started by going through a book that explained the origins of the holiday. Afterwards they started a project. Week 14: January 4th-6th

       Monday, January 4th ➽Activity of the Day: Reading     I was reading with one of my usual girls today, and  she's definitely coming along. She said that she hadn't read over break (much to my chagrin). We started with a book she likes but which has enough words she can't memorize it. She breezed right along! She had a few bumbles, but that was to be expected.       I'm realizing that there's a trick with her. It doesn't seem to matter how many words are on a page (or the length of the words) but how many pages there are in the book. When we were reading a book that was longer but relatively easier, she clammed up. She stumbled, lost her spot, and would try to get me sidetracked (after a semester of teaching, I'm becoming immune to that, though!).
