➽Activity of the Day: Reading getting difficult

       Reading with my students has been getting difficult. Being with Hubbell for five months makes kids start to feel like I’m old news. As a result, I’m losing respect. When reading with my student today, she wouldn’t show me her book while reading. At first, I was being gentle, but by the end I had to be stern and nearly demand her to show me the book. I want to be the good cop, so I wonder how I’ll be able to handle the kids moving towards the end of the school year.


   Wednesday, February 8th

➽Activity of the Day: Math is worse!

      In math today, the student I had was also being difficult.We did ruler math. This method works by starting on an initial number on the ruler and adding the second. So, if the problem was 5 + 7, this student would start with 5 centimeters and add 7. Each new problem was met with an “I don’t want to do this”, or “Can I go to the bathroom?” This put me in a difficult spot because the last thing I want to do is raise my voice at a seven-year-old. For having a small vocabulary because they’re second graders, these students sure know a lot of ways to make excuses!


     Thursday, February 9th

➽Activity of the Day: Reading

       I made some good progress with my student from Tuesday. Before we started reading, I began by explaining the importance of me being able to see the pages. I told her I wasn’t mad at her, but that we did need to be serious when we worked together because that’s how we make progress. Then we hugged. She did really well today!

      Wednesday, December 14th ➽Activity of the Day: Creating a complex sentence     The class worked on creating a sentence today. The parameters were that every kid's sentence needed to include a noun, verb, and adjective- and they all needed to start with the letter M. Week 14: January 4th-6th

       Monday, January 4th ➽Activity of the Day: Reading     I was reading with one of my usual girls today, and  she's definitely coming along. She said that she hadn't read over break (much to my chagrin). We started with a book she likes but which has enough words she can't memorize it. She breezed right along! She had a few bumbles, but that was to be expected.       I'm realizing that there's a trick with her. It doesn't seem to matter how many words are on a page (or the length of the words) but how many pages there are in the book. When we were reading a book that was longer but relatively easier, she clammed up. She stumbled, lost her spot, and would try to get me sidetracked (after a semester of teaching, I'm becoming immune to that, though!). Week 23: March 22nd-24th

               Wednesday, March 22nd ➽Activity of the Day: Reading     I was working with one of my typical girls today. She was reading much more fluently. I'm proud of her because I can tell she's been practicing during break. She did better than last week! The next step is making inferences and recalling facts. While she can read through sentences, if I ask her questions about what happened in the story, she doesn't remember. If I ask her to make logical inferences about what will happen next, she doesn't want to share. I'm not sure if she won't make inferences because she's afraid of embarrassing herself to me.
