➽Activity of the Day: 100th Day Coloring!

I forgot how fun the 100th Day is in elementary school! When I came into the classroom, the kids were all dressed up as if they were 100 years old. They had canes, wigs, clothes they bought from a costume store or borrowed from grandparents, and some even used makeup to draw wrinkles. A few of the kids were showing me how they hobbled with canes. I loved seeing their smiling faces!

The activity of the day was a color by number. There were different sections on a piece of paper. Each section would have a subtraction or addition problem. For example, one of the problems was 11-4. My student would solve the problem, then go to the top of the sheet and see what color the sum or difference matched up with. It’s such a fun way to practice problems. Why can’t Roosevelt do stuff like this?!

➽Activity of the Day: Prefixes

Boy, was this a struggle! In last week’s post, I talked about two different kids who weren’t easy to work with. Well, I had both of them today. I learned that I had it easy last week! We were working with prefixes today. After looking them in the eye while explaining what a prefix was and how to do this activity (my hope was that looking them in the eye would make them feel as if they had to pay attention), we started. I soon learned that what I said went in one ear and out the other. They were arguing with each other about who got to do what (after I made an order of what girl was solving which problem), even though neither of them knew what to do. I don’t want to have to run to Mrs. Carlson, but she asked me how today went and I had to rat them out.

  1. Do you work with new kids every day or do you have the same few you work with?
