➽Activity of the Day: Reading

I read with one of my typical girls today. It often feels like two steps forward and one step back. I’m working to keep up with fluency. I might try doing a sticker chart for her reading at night. I know she can get to where she needs to be, she just needs to be reading after school.

I had so much fun with the kids today. We were indoors for recess because of how cold it’s been so I played legos with them. Most of the kids in this class don’t put up social walls. They are open books and want me to know what’s going on in their lives. Sometimes they ask for advice or about my personal life. At this point, I have individualized connections with both of them. I love how close I’m getting with them!

➽Activity of the Day: Strugglebus central

I was tasked with working with two of my usual students today. They were using the fact that I am still in high school to slack off. We were doing a popcorn read but they would yell at each other or ask to go to the bathroom/get a drink on every other page. They would say they “really had to go” and hop around for emphasis. It put me in a difficult position because I’m not good with confrontation- especially with an eight-year-old. I firmly told them I needed them to sit down and read. I warned them there would be consequences for not listening to me and that I was there to help them. I remembered when I was their age, the one thing a teacher could do that would never fail to get my classmates and I’s attention was guilt tripping. I told them how I felt when they weren’t listening. That helped.

  1. Is the class working on a book together or do you read different books with them when you are there?
