     Monday, February 27th

➽Activity of the Day: Popcorn reading

       After struggling with my students on Friday, I was back at it today- this time at Mrs. Carlson’s table. Being in the presence of a teacher got them to work hard. While I was disappointed I could not control them the way Mrs. Carlson can, I was given a huge compliment. She told me I had a good teaching style. Mrs. Carlson approved my method of letting kids figure out a tricky word by themselves (asking them to sound it out) then giving them praise. She liked that I asked questions at the end about what they read so they could practice synthesis. I left beaming!

      

        Tuesday, February 28th

➽Activity of the Day: Black Pride March 

       Today Hubbell had an assembly to commemorate the end of Black History Month. Two black speakers came to encourage all kids of their worth. They had a chorus of over 50 students chanting to the students that they mattered, are smart, and are loved. It brought tears to my eyes.

       After, Hubbell kids and Roosevelt students ambassadors (me included) marched nearly 3/4s of a mile with Black Lives Matter banners around the Roosevelt/Hubbell area. It was a great opportunity to inspire young kids about how great they can be, to be open-minded, and inclusive.


       Thursday, March 2nd

➽Activity of the Day: Another student doing well!

        I worked with a third student who is making great strides in her reading fluency. This week has brought great progress for all three of my usual students. SHE wanted to read extra and chose a more difficult book. This has been one great week!

  Tuesday, November 1st      ➽Activity of the Day:  Case of the Greedy Gnomes     I worked with a group of 3 for the Case of the Greedy Gnomes. These kids are above average for reading comprehension and mathematics. The Case of the Greedy Gnomes is a multi-day riddle. Each day, these kids would interpret bar graphs. There would be math questions corresponding to the graphs (ex. How many more blueberry pies were there than apple tarts?), and each question would have a letter (ex. the letter e). Following the example, if there were three more blueberry pies than apple tarts, the number three would correspond to e. Above the graph were blank spaces with numbers underneath them. For this blueberry pie/apple tart problem, every blank space with the number 3 underneath would be replaced by an 'e'. Week 13: December 12th-16th

      Wednesday, December 14th ➽Activity of the Day: Creating a complex sentence     The class worked on creating a sentence today. The parameters were that every kid's sentence needed to include a noun, verb, and adjective- and they all needed to start with the letter M. The students began by coming up with example words as a class. Then they went back to their table and constructed their own sentences. I walked around, helping out and checking spelling.      Thursday, December 15th ➽Activity of the Day: Kwanzaa Day 1     Today the class was learning about Kwanzaa. They started by going through a book that explained the origins of the holiday. Afterwards they started a project. On a black piece of construction with a brown paper underneath to represent the kinara, the children cut out 7 candles (1 they colored black to go in the middle, three red to go on the left and three green to go on the right)  a nd 7 flames. Week 14: January 4th-6th

       Monday, January 4th ➽Activity of the Day: Reading     I was reading with one of my usual girls today, and  she's definitely coming along. She said that she hadn't read over break (much to my chagrin). We started with a book she likes but which has enough words she can't memorize it. She breezed right along! She had a few bumbles, but that was to be expected.       I'm realizing that there's a trick with her. It doesn't seem to matter how many words are on a page (or the length of the words) but how many pages there are in the book. When we were reading a book that was longer but relatively easier, she clammed up. She stumbled, lost her spot, and would try to get me sidetracked (after a semester of teaching, I'm becoming immune to that, though!).
