Week 22: March 6th-9th

➽Activity of the Day: Egg activity and reading with other students
I got to read with different people today! Each kid read from the same large book called "Journeys" which houses many different stories within it. Since I don’t see them every day, these kids had a lot to tell me. One girl wanted me to know she went to the science center and saw a snapping turtle. She said she was scared it would come over the glass cage and bite her fingers or her dad’s head. A different girl was telling me how she sat through two hours at the civic center for a play in Spanish (she doesn’t speak Spanish). One boy was telling me about his love life. This was a great start to my Monday!
The kids were all taking care of eggs today. They got to name their eggs (the kids I was working with today named their eggs Cookies, Jeff, and Mr. Egg). They have to take care of it the whole day without cracking it.

➽Activity of the Day: Making sentences
I worked with two of my typical students today. Mrs. Carlson told them there would be consequences if they goofed off. That scared them! Hopefully we'll eventually get to the point where Mrs. Carlson doesn't need to make these warnings for them to listen to me.
We were working on building sentences. The kids were given a word and they had to build a sentence with it. The sentence had to include a noun, adjective and vowel. It also needed a c
apital letter at the beginning and punctuation at the end. This was a great step into their language and literature ability. They practiced spelling, sentence structure, and punctuation.

➽Activity of the Day: Reading
One of the three girls I'm working with read a book in the 'K' category which is a huge step for her. The reading system works where books get more challenging the farther into the alphabet they're labeled. At the beginning of the year, this same girl was reading (and struggling with) books in the 'C' category. I was almost brought to tears with how far she's come. Though there were breaks in concentration and many stumbles, neither take away from all the progress she's made!
