Week 26: April 10th-13th
Monday, April 10th
➽Activity of the day: Reading
Today I was working with the girl out of my typical three that I didn't work with last week. Her reading is getting smooth! Typically, she struggles with distractions. If anyone is walking down the hallway, she'll stop to watch them and I have to bring her back in. If her books or my stuff aren't "arranged perfectly" she'll stop reading to fix them. But today she stayed in her chair, not fidgeting more than the average second-grader would and read. She made few mistakes and was able to recall what she had read earlier. I don't want to jinx anything but I am extremely proud of her!

➽Activity of the day: Reading
I read with my girl from last Wednesday. Last week I wrote in my entry that this girl tries very hard but is struggling to get over the hump to where she needs to be. In that Wednesday post, I noted I would try reading once every couple of pages to engage her and help her achieve fluency. However, when she sat down today and started reading, I knew I didn't need to. She was flying through! I told her we needed to up the ante and had her read a mini chapter book just to see what would happen. She made a few stumbles- which was expected, but she did it.
That's two girls moving in the right direction. One to go!

➽Activity of the day: Cookie Thief Activity
For work time today, I played a game with my girl from Monday and the one I was struggling with last week. To play the game, someone would draw a card. The card would have a sentence and the player who drew the card would read it. If they read correctly, they would get to keep the card. Then the next person would go and do the same thing. In addition to sentences, there were cards giving extra turns, skipping turns, making a player put a card back, etc. It was a fun way to engage the girls while challenging them.
However, my girl from last week simply wouldn't try. She did not want to be there and wouldn't put effort into reading. I can see a growing divide in fluency level between those two girls. What's worrying me is that my girl who isn't trying is already well behind grade level. I don't want it to get worse.

What do you think is the biggest difference you see between high school students and elementary students in the way they view learning?
